On June 8-9, 2026, Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Republic of Moldova is hosting the 1st Antimicrobial Stewardship in Tuberculosis Conference, a landmark scientific event dedicated to strengthening efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance in tuberculosis (TB).
The conference is organized by the Tuberculosis Network European Trials Group (TBnet) in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe, Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy, the Research Center Borstel – Leibniz Lung Center (Germany), and other distinguished international partners active in public health and tuberculosis control.
The event will be officially opened at 2:00 p.m. in Conference Hall No. 205, located in the University’s Central Teaching Building (165, Stefan cel Mare și Sfant Avenue, Chisinau).
The conference brings together experts, researchers, clinicians, and policymakers from across the WHO European Region to discuss the challenges posed by drug-resistant tuberculosis and to identify practical solutions for implementing international antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) standards in TB management.
At a time when antimicrobial resistance is recognized as one of the most serious threats to global health, and hundreds of thousands of people develop multidrug-resistant or rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis each year, the conference aims to promote the responsible use of anti-tuberculosis medicines and contribute to improved treatment outcomes.
The scientific programme includes sessions focused on the epidemiology of drug-resistant tuberculosis, mechanisms of drug resistance development, international clinical standards for antimicrobial stewardship in TB, and the results of a regional survey assessing their implementation. Participants will also engage in thematic workshops and working groups dedicated to developing recommendations and practical interventions to strengthen AMS practices throughout the WHO European Region.
The event features representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO), the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID), the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF), The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union), as well as leading academic and medical institutions from across Europe.
The opening ceremony will be attended by representatives of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Moldova, the WHO Regional Office for Europe, Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy, TBnet, and other partner organisations.
By hosting this international conference, Nicolae Testemitanu University contributes to advancing research, medical education, and international cooperation in public health, while supporting global efforts to prevent and combat tuberculosis and antimicrobial resistance.
